Itinerary

Day 1: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou → Midelt

Your adventure begins in the cultural capital of Fes at 8:00 AM. After meeting your driver-guide, you’ll journey south through the lush landscapes of the Middle Atlas Mountains, where the scenery shifts from olive groves to towering cedar forests.

Stop at Ifrane, often called the Switzerland of Morocco, famous for its European-style architecture and clean mountain air. Continue to Azrou, a charming Berber town whose name means “rock.” Here, you can take a short walk in the cedar forest and meet the playful Barbary macaques that live freely in the woods.

Enjoy lunch en route before arriving in Midelt, a peaceful mountain town surrounded by apple orchards and snow-capped peaks. This area is also known for its mineral mines, including quartz and fluorite.

Overnight in Midelt in a charming guesthouse with dinner included.

Day 2: Midelt → Ziz Valley → Erfoud → Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, continue your descent southward through the Tizi n’Talghamt Pass (“the She-Camel Pass”), where the scenery opens up to the vast Ziz Valley — a ribbon of green palm groves winding between dramatic rock cliffs.

Stop for panoramic photos and admire the traditional ksars (fortified villages) along the route. You’ll reach Erfoud, a small desert town famous for its fossils and annual date festival. Visit a local fossil workshop to see how ancient marine fossils are turned into decorative items and jewelry.

By afternoon, arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes. Here, your camels await to take you across the dunes for a sunset camel trek.

As the sun sets, the golden sand turns shades of orange and pink — a mesmerizing sight. At your luxury desert camp, enjoy mint tea, a delicious Moroccan dinner, and traditional Berber drumming music around the fire.

Overnight in a luxury camp in Erg Chebbi Desert (private en-suite tent).

Day 3: Merzouga → Rissani → Tinghir → Todra Gorges → Dades Valley

Wake up early to witness one of nature’s most magical moments — sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, travel toward Tinghir via Rissani, a historic trading town once known as the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty (the royal family of Morocco).

You’ll explore the Todra Gorges, a natural wonder with towering limestone cliffs reaching up to 300 meters. Enjoy a peaceful walk along the river, passing Berber villages and green fields cultivated with palms and olives.

In the afternoon, continue to the Dades Valley, also called the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, where ancient fortresses line the roadsides. Stop at the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formations and admire the spectacular Dades Gorges from one of the viewpoints.

Overnight in a traditional kasbah or hotel overlooking the Dades Valley.

Day 4: Dades Valley → Boutaghrar → Skoura Oasis → Ouarzazate

After breakfast, continue through the Dades Valley and drive off-road along the Boutaghrar piste, where you’ll have the chance to visit a nomadic family living in mountain caves. Share tea and stories with them — a rare glimpse into the resilience of desert life.

The journey continues through the Valley of Roses, known for its fragrant Damascene roses used to produce rosewater and cosmetics. In Skoura, visit the beautiful Kasbah Amredhil, a perfectly restored adobe fortress that serves as a museum showcasing Berber life and architecture.

Arrive in Ouarzazate, nicknamed “The Hollywood of Africa,” famous for its film studios and desert landscapes featured in movies like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

Overnight in Ouarzazate in a comfortable guesthouse or riad.

Day 5: Ouarzazate → Aït Ben Haddou → Telouet → Marrakech

After breakfast, visit Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Morocco’s most iconic ksar. Walk through its maze-like alleys, admire the ancient clay towers, and visit the filming spots of Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.

Continue along the scenic Ounila Valley, where colorful rock formations and traditional Berber villages line the winding road. Visit the Kasbah Telouet, once the grand residence of the powerful Glaoui family. Though damaged by the 2023 earthquake, the site remains an important part of Morocco’s history and architecture.

Finally, cross the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m) before descending into the red city of Marrakech.

Arrival around 6:00 PM, marking the end of your Fes to Marrakech desert adventure.
